Venice
With its architectural delights and tourists on gondolas, it’s easy to forget that Venice is, after all, a small city with tightly-knitted neighbourhoods. Once you’ve made your pilgrimages to the museums and palaces, explore its sestieri, where grandmothers peek from behind laundry lines and hole-in-the-wall spots offer pleasant surprises. Venice may creak under the reality of climate change and tourism demand, but they take little away from its charm.
